COACHING EPISODE: Compassionate Attunement in the Pain Cycle

with

Michael Pham

Today, Coach Michael walks us through how compassionate attunement can transform the way we show up in dating and singleness, offering practical steps and encouragement for navigating emotional pain with care and connection!

Introduction

Hey HOD fam! We’re back with a special BONUS episode in our ongoing mini season, and today we’re introducing you to one of the School of Dating coaches from Heart of Dating: Michael! If navigating emotional pain in singleness or relationships feels confusing, this episode is all for you. Michael breaks down how to process emotions in dating, especially when you’re feeling stuck, rejected, or overwhelmed. So get ready for some honest, grace-filled wisdom about pain, faith, and compassionate attunement. Let’s dig in!

Meet Michael

Michael is coming to us from North Carolina and has been part of the HOD fam since 2022! After discovering Heart of Dating through a Facebook ad, he dove into the Attract Your Dream Date program and found his whole approach to dating changed for the better: way more fun, less anxiety. Now he’s coaching singles in their own journeys.

Emotional Pain + Singleness: What’s Really Going On?

We’ve all had those moments in our heads:

  • "Why did I react like that?"
  • "She makes me feel like I’m not good enough."
  • "Am I too sensitive?"
  • "Is he ignoring me?"

Michael gets it! Those thoughts can get real loud, and whether you withdraw or get anxious, our typical reactions are often just coping with pain, not fixing it.

Some real talk Michael drops:

  • Emotions are not good or bad. They’re signals that show us what's going on inside 00:15.
  • We can try to “logic” or “theologize” away our feelings, but they don’t just disappear 03:39.
  • Dismissing emotional pain doesn’t work long-term; it comes back up, sometimes even stronger 05:11.

Pain Cycles + What To Do About It

Ever find yourself reacting in a way you know doesn’t reflect your heart but still can’t stop? Michael reassures that it is totally human 04:18! Addressing emotional pain is a process, and we can start by giving ourselves permission to get cared for. When we ignore emotional pain, it spills over into our relationships and can cause guilt and shame.

Try this:

  • Notice your pain, don’t dismiss it 08:20.
  • Give yourself permission to “get checked out” just like you would with a physical injury 05:04.
  • Remember: God offers comfort in all afflictions, not just when things are “really bad” 07:14.

Compassionate Attunement: The Game-Changer

Whether it’s your pain, or your significant other’s, Michael says learning “compassionate attunement” is huge:

  • Instead of jumping in to fix or give advice, just be present and lean in with curiosity 08:07.
  • Jesus modeled this so well. Think about Jesus weeping with Mary and Martha before resurrecting Lazarus 09:16.

Examples Michael gives:

  • When your partner says, “It hurts when you tell me to get over it,” try, “Thank you for sharing. I can imagine that feels really upsetting. Tell me more,” instead of jumping to defend or explain. Just listen and acknowledge the pain 12:12.

This approach helps move your relationship from pain cycles to deep connection.

God Cares About Your Pain

Michael brings it all back to faith:

  • God’s character is to comfort, not ignore our pain 07:20.
  • As we receive compassion from God, we’re able to offer compassionate presence to others 07:29.

Remember: Emotions are valid, but every action based on them may not lead to connection. Compassionate attunement helps us build bridges, process pain, and open up safe, honest conversations in our relationships 13:05.

Wrap Up

If you’re feeling stuck in cycles of self-doubt, emotional pain, or relationship conflict, breathe—there’s grace for you here! This episode is your invitation to acknowledge your pain, receive comfort, and connect with others in a deeper, more compassionate way.

Thank you, Michael, for sharing such practical wisdom and encouragement for our journeys through singleness and dating. See you next time, HOD fam!
