Post Purity Culture and Sexual Ethic Today

with

Judah and Chelsea Smith

Kait and JJ have a real and raw conversation about post purity culture and sexual ethic today with Judah and Chelsea Smith.

The challenging part of true love is accountability and learning.. As two members of the church who grew up with this purity culture movement, how do we as a church and leaders look back? How do speak to it? How do we learn and grow from it?

  • The complication often times is the indication of evidence of probably traditions of men and how we perceive and define purity in our world now.
  • Humility is essential in learning and growing and moving forward.
  • Big thing for Judah when it comes to sexual purity/sexual purity is, is this more about Jesus or more about us?
  • For Judah sexual purity became the point instead of Jesus and that’s a problem.
  • How do we live like Jesus?
  • Our sexual purity and integrity has a lot to do with a direct result of your infatuation, admiration, and adoration for Jesus.
  • Fear and shame can change and shape our behavior. It won’t be lasting change though.
  • Romans 15
  • If we aren’t using righteousness, peace and joy it’s not from God.
  • Somewhere along the way we have traded in the eternal, long lasting, life change that Jesus does on the inside and exchanged it for you can’t wear certain clothes, you can’t use certain words, you can’t smoke certain stuff, and you can’t touch certain body parts. This is such a shortsided approch to becoming like Jesus.

How do we start healing what was done to the people who landed in these two camps?

  • Everything we do as Christains has to start with the way we see God and see Jesus.
  • Repenting is so important. It means change your mind. Change the way you see God.
  • Jesus came FULL of grace and truth and mercy.
  • God looks at you regardless of your past and says, “You are my daughter/son and I am pleased with you.”
  • We have to change our whole approach to match Jesus’.
  • Tone and view is everything in our messaging.

What is the journey that somebody needs to start taking, what are the next steps, how do they start clinging to hope in this area of dating that feels so convoluted?

  • 1 Peter - Be Holy because I am Holy.
  • Holiness is defined by how well we love each other, how well we forgive each other, and how well we accept each other.
  • We have to redefine holiness and get back to the biblical definition of holiness.
  • We have a culture of earning and deserving. How far will we take it?
  • We perpetcuated arrogance and self sufficiency, intended to or not.
  • Everyone is welcome in the Father’s house through the Son.
  • Thank God we don’t get what we deserve.

How do we embrace holiness without fear and shame but still walk it out in a way that’s honoring to God and deep sense of why you’re doing it?

  • Romans 8
  • The goal is to look like Jesus.
  • If we believe that by looking to Jesus we become more like him, then we need to allow room for God to work in lives with mystery without shame and guilt.

Final dating advice for singles

  • Give yourself a lot of grace and a lot of mercy.
  • Don’t date for instagram or tiktok.
  • Date for the longterm.
