Spiritual Leader IN Dating

with

Kait and JJ

Today we’re diving into spiritual leadership in dating as we unpack what it really looks like in relationships, the red flags to watch out for, and how servant leadership changes the game!

Introduction

Hey HOD fam! We are so excited for today’s episode as we deep dive into one of the most confusing and most frequently tossed-around concepts in Christian dating: spiritual leadership. Whether you’ve felt lost by the phrase or unsure about what it actually looks like when dating, you are not alone! Today, Kait and JJ unpack what it really means to look for a “spiritual leader” in dating, dig into common myths, and give some practical wisdom for both men and women. Let’s get REALLY honest about servant leadership, red flags, and what truly matters as you pursue healthy, Jesus-centered relationships.

What Is Spiritual Leadership in Dating?

  • The phrase “spiritual leader” gets thrown around everywhere in Christian circles. If you ask 100 people what it means, you’ll get 100 different answers (01:09).
  • Spiritual leadership is not about having authority, dominance, or always being the most “advanced” in spiritual things.
  • Instead, the episode breaks it down like this: Spiritual leadership is servant leadership. It’s not about talk. It’s about sacrificial action and consistent service to others (06:41).
  • JJ shares advice he’d give his daughter: look not just at a man’s words, but ask whether people around him are flourishing because he’s a servant leader (07:02).

5 Ways a Man Can Lead in Dating (Without Acting Like Your Husband)

  1. Initiative: He takes the first step, plans, pursues, and moves things forward. He doesn’t leave you confused or guessing (00:09, 16:31).
  2. Clarity: He defines things! No games, no ambiguity. He initiates the DTR, provides regular check-ins, and makes his intentions clear (17:16). Clarity is kindness.
  3. Pace & Protection: He sets a wise pace. That means no rushing, no manipulation, and protecting both your heart and purity (emotionally, physically, spiritually). He honors boundaries and asks what’s really best for you (18:23, 20:01).
  4. Pursues Covenant: He dates on purpose, with direction and intentionality, because dating is a means to an end, not the final destination (22:04).
  5. Responsibility: He owns his stuff, initiates repair after conflict, takes responsibility even when it’s not his fault. (22:29).

What Spiritual Leadership in Dating is NOT

  • Control: If a man tries to exercise control over your choices, your body, your spiritual walk, that is a MAJOR red flag. That’s not leadership, that’s spiritual abuse (24:00, 27:37).
  • Performing: Big prayers, impressive scripture-quoting, and fluent spiritual language mean nothing without actual servant-hearted fruit (26:13).
  • Passivity: The “I’m just waiting on God” excuse for never initiating or defining things is not leadership (28:41).
  • Dictating Submission: Any guy who says or implies “you need to submit to me” while dating—run, girl. Nowhere did Jesus ever demand submission; He led by sacrificial invitation (27:23).

Myth-Busting: Common Misconceptions

  • He has to be “ahead” spiritually. It’s not about who knows more or is “deeper”. It’s about who’s willing to go first in humility, service, and repentance (11:19, 11:33).
  • Quiet Guys Can’t Lead: Leadership isn’t about being the loudest or most verbal. Kait and JJ both agree: better a quiet, faithful servant leader than a vocal, performative “spiritual” guy (35:54).
  • Strong Women Must Shrink: If you’re an ambitious or “leader-type” woman, you do not have to shrink to be led. The healthiest dynamic is when strong women and men empower one another, creating space for both to lead with their gifts (37:01). But, making space for a man to be needed can be a gift to the relationship (38:51).
  • “He just needs potential.” Don’t date potential. If a servant’s heart isn’t being lived out now, it’s not real leadership (29:02).

Are You More “Spiritually Mature” Than Him?

  • If the woman is “further along” spiritually, it doesn’t disqualify the guy as long as he’s teachable and growing in servant leadership (30:33).
  • Leadership is a posture and a spirit, not a scoreboard!
  • Ultimately, servant leadership the Bible points to stems from a strong relationship with Jesus, not just from being kind or nice or “serving.” It starts with dying to self as modeled by Christ (34:29, 34:45).

Bottom Line: Look for Fruit, Not Flash

  • The truest sign of a godly man ready for healthy leadership in dating? A consistent, joyful servant’s heart. He initiates, clarifies, takes responsibility, leads by invitation (not demand), and empowers those around him (34:49).
  • When in doubt, watch his actions—how he treats his family, strangers, and you—not just the words he says or posts he makes.
  • And if you’re not seeing servant-hearted leadership while dating, don’t expect it to magically appear at the altar (24:31).

Encouragement for the Journey

  • Ladies: Don’t shrink yourself, but also don’t be so fiercely independent that you never allow someone to love and serve you (39:09).
  • Guys: Servant leadership isn’t for the lazy! It’s active, humble, and requires daily sacrifice and growth (30:08).
  • Everyone: Jesus is our model! Leadership is fundamentally an invitation, never a demand. The invitation is always to mutual, empowered, sacrificial love.
